UNDAVALLI CAVES

I packed my gear and peeped outside from the third-floor window. I could see neither daylight nor the grey colors of the dawn. It surprised me, the white fog blanketed the whole city; wherever my eyes could reach.

I have to wait for four hours to get a feel of the struggling Sun rays to show its presence and one more hour to bring into view the road I need to drive on. I planned to survey and photograph the most sacredly talked about ‘The triple storied rock-cut caves.’

They are famed as Undavalli caves. They took the village name; were they first discovered. Undavalli village is on the right bank of river Krishna, 5 km off the Vijayawada – Guntur high way.  The three-storied caves are the monolithic prototype of Indian rock-cut architecture. They carved these caves out of a mountainside facing the Krishna River. It dates them to the early part of 6th and 7th century A.D.

I tried to show in my photographs the craftsmanship and skill found in the caves, its pillars, and roofs; all excavated and sculpted from a huge rocky mountain.

(Undavalli caves are in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, and In India)
